Gunman Shot Dead Near White House by Secret Service

On Saturday evening, May 23, 2026, a gunman approached a U.S. Secret Service checkpoint near the White House at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, pulled a weapon from his bag, and opened fire on officers. Secret Service agents returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect, who was later identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best of Dundalk, Maryland. President Trump was in the White House at the time but was unharmed, and a bystander sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
